Review: A jazz head with deep hip-hop roots, New York-based saxophonist Benny Reid returns with a brand-new 7" on Fat Beats, following his 2023 The Infamous Live reinterpretation. This is his latest standalone tribute, and it plays like a deliberate two-sided concept: '93 'Til Infinity' on the A, 'Day One' on the B i reworked with full reverence but plenty of vision. Reid's take on the former is all patience and atmosphere, stretching the groove into moody, modal territory without losing its swing. Flip it for a tighter, chunkier pass at the D.I.T.C. classic, where arrangements lean into low-end murk and sharper rhythmic interplay. Drawing on years of post-bop work for Concord, Reid reanimates sample culture as memory, process and momentum.

Review: London soul-jazz composer and producer Andrei Nikolsky - formerly of the equal-parts Palace Records favourite The Kanpai Quartet - now broadcasts yet two more heavy-hitters from straight from the label whose logo pulls from the iconographic Crystal Palace Transmitter. 'Botchit & Scarper' is heard far and wide, hijacking the airwaves with what sounds at face value like an unsound moral principle - but on second listen to its slack-shouldered ease, whimsied brass and scaphoid drumming, might function just as well as a principle for free living. Of course, if something's worth doing then it's worth doing "botched", though Nikolsky currently hasn't botched this one. 'Wafty' follows as the blue piano sojourn, replete with plinking ninths and a hiss-hummed rhythms section.

Review: London minimal house innovator-continuator Matthew Herbert teams up with drummer and vocalist Momoko Gill - a self-taught musician with ties to Coby Sey and Tirzah - for a rawly real new record, Clay, as ever drawing on not just the textures of daily life, but also unconventional sound sources. As is typical for Herbert and his discog-wide interest in domestic sounds, we hear everyday foleys and realist samples utilised with efficiency, from kotos to basketballs, as Gill's voice carries across the eleven tracks a disarming clarity, from the layered arrangements of 'Mowing' to the up-close harmonies of 'Heart'. The pair previously collaborated on 2024's 'Fallen' and Gill's remix of Herbert's 'The Horse Is Here', but this is their first full-length release as a duo.

Review: The latest release from London's Kokoroko expands their jazz-rooted palette into something looser, brighter and more groove-led. Still grounded in Afrobeat, the eleven tracks lean into British r&b, West African disco and lovers rock, with the band embracing richer synth work and electronic textures. Opener 'Never Lost' sets out the warm, melodic terrain, before 'Sweetie' flips into a lilting, drum-machine-led love song. 'Closer To Me' and 'My Father In Heaven' offer hazy, introspective turns, while 'Idea 5 (Call My Name)' featuring LULU and the Azekel-assisted 'Three Piece Suit' sharpen the edges with silky, syncopated swagger. The Demae-led 'Time & Time' draws on 80s soul and head-nod jazz, followed by 'Da Du Dah', a bubbling interlude. 'Together We Are' and 'Just Can't Wait' stretch into optimistic dancefloor territory, before 'Over/Reprise' ties it all back to the band's meditative core. Their second full-length, it feels freer and more collaborative, but still unmistakably them.

Review: There is a great backstory to Darryl Baalki. We don't know how true it is, if at all, but it goes something like this: he is an enigmatic figure raised alone by his mother, his only connection to the outside world was his father's record collection. As a child, he believed this collection contained all the music ever created. Convinced that new music could only emerge by reassembling its parts, he obsessively listened, memorised, and mentally reconstructed sound before making new compositions from existing pieces. This is his latest missive and it is deeply moving, from the percussive jumble of the opener to the earthy shuffle and seductive sax of 'Devil May Care' via the hypnotising trumpet leads of 'Nothing Will Break You'. Fans of Mo Kolours et all will love this.

Review: Brownswood and Kokoroko link through local Brixton, delivering on Tuff Times Never Last, the jazz collective's newest LP. The 11-track LP is an uplifting exploration of life's dualities, weaving themes of community, sensuality, childhood, loss, and perseverance. The title draws from a viral meme of the same name, where co-bandleader Onome Edgeworth notes, "A lot of beauty comes out of difficulties". Review: British-born soul artist Eki Shola, resident variously between the US and Japan, is said to have spent much of her creative career in "enforced isolation", and her music bears all the great hallmarks of a true artist. The most recent LP Kaeru is true to said assessment, reflecting Shola's long and enduring multi-instrumental, Eastern hemispherical instrumental interests: curiosities such as shakuhachi, shamisen, and Morin Khuur were incorporated into her already brilliant electronica soul salutations, representing leaps in both geography and sound. This new Oonops Drops issue brings two fresh new interpretations to follow 2023's LP, evincing the same good headspace that birthed the first.

Review: Brighton-based Georgie Sweet returns with a beautifully realised second album, moving confidently beyond the laidback r&b textures of her debut into something more intimate and richly melodic. Created in close collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Marc Rapson, the project explores loss, youth, and self-discovery, filtered through Georgie's quietly powerful voice and understated songwriting. From the lush, piano-driven warmth of opener 'The Ones We Loved' to the jazzy bounce of 'Smaller' and the soulful midtempo glow of 'Equal Measure', the record flows effortlessly between moods. 'Bedsheets' and 'All That We Were' showcase Georgie's gift for epic, emotional balladry, while tracks like 'As I Am' and 'In My Stride' find a sweet spot between neo-soul smoothness and jazz-inflected groove. Produced entirely at Rapson's Hertfordshire home, the album feels deeply personal, marked by moments of vulnerability ('Patricia') and quiet introspection ('Maybe In A Different Life'), culminating in the hopeful resolve of closing title track 'I Swear To You'. It's a fresh, heartfelt release that confirms Georgie Sweet as one of the UK's most compelling hidden gems.

Review: Waves Within is a genre-blending triumph from Mexican producers Luca Ferrand and Selva in which they serve up sounds that evolve through deep house, broken beat, jazz, nu-disco and hip-hop. Opener 'Bona Fide' pairs dusty jazz and disco-house with a slick hip-hop switch and some superbly sunny melodies. 'Zarapes (After the Rain)' marries Mexican folk and broken beat, then 'Back To That Thang' twists jazz guitar into a genre-fluid ride and the title track evokes tropical 90s house. Closer 'Lynx' is a shapeshifting house cut with bulbous bass and sophisticated sound design that really brings it to life.

Review: First released in 2003 and long out of reach for collectors, Contrasts finds Marcos Valle folding early 2000s production into ever-fluid Brazilian songwriting. Now on a double vinyl reissue through Far Out, the record snags a protracted moment of creative stretch, where samba, bossa, baiao and pop intertwine with broken beat, house and trip-hop textures. 'Parabens' and 'Agua De Coco' became cult favourites, the former sampled by Childish Gambino and flipped by Tom Misch and Misa Negra. Produced by Roc Hunter with Valle's wife Patricia Alvi on vocals, plus Robertinho Silva and Azymuth's Alex Malheiros, Contrasts finally gets its due, complete with 'Valeu' and 'My Nightingale' on vinyl for the first time.

Review: Majestic, literally lowercase jazz minimalism from Kenichiro Nishihara, first released on Japan's Unprivate label in 2015. Nishihara's first album for the label, and his 11th overall, marked a thorough purgation in sound and focus on what we might call "sonic landscape painting", after 2013's Sound Remedy heard the last of his many studious still lives for FIL Music. With precise beat programming and excellent instrumental playing to compare, Nishihara added contributing drummer Mabanua, Ovall on vocal duties, and Cise Starr, while Substantial (a staple of Nishihara's projects), SLik d (known for his work on 'Colors') and Ashley Eriksson (from LAKE) also lent their appended talents. Additionally, Finnish jazz ensemble Five Corners Quintet's trumpet and flugelhorn player, Jukka Eskola, graced the album, adding a further dash to a long, eventidal electronica jazz rove.
