It's a wide-ranging affair which includes covers of contemporary standards such as 'You Keep Me Hanging On', 'Back In The U.S.S.R.' and 'Soul Limbo', all given a bold and brassy jazz revision by Ishikawa's band, which included Hiromasa Suzuki on piano, Masaoki Terakawa on bass and Takeru Muraoka on tenor sax. This is the first time it's been repressed since its release, so you can expect all Japanese jazz aficionados to be jumping on this one quickly.

Review: Hi-Phonic Big 15's Hi-Phonics Hi-Phonics album is a real curio from 1979 that deep diggers have long fawned over. It is the only album from this outfit and it was once reissued on CD in 2004 but never before on vinyl. Musically it blends reggae, soul and jazz-funk into gloriously musical tracks with lavish arrangements and a golden soul for late-night lounge spaces. At times romantic, at others playful, it's as likely to be heard at a sundown session on the beach in Ibiza as it is at a listening bar in London or a street party in Leeds.

Review: By 1973, Soul Media, formed in Tokyo by saxophonist Jiro Inagaki, had spent a good many years blurring the lines of jazz and rock, of course in what we Westerners would interpret as distinctive "J import" style. With In the Groove, their studio output took a decisive leap, injecting a tighter funk sensibility into an already well oiled jazz membrane. Refusing to mimic the overseas jazz-funk scene, Inagaki and his band offered their own take: confident, dynamic and layered with a distinctly Japanese stance on groove and arrangement. The Crusaders' influence looms large, where Inagaki was closely following their evolution. But this isn't aphonic pastiche; the record finds its own voice in its interplays of brass and rhythm, with 'That's How I Feel' causing a slow trickle then downpour of funktastic piano-funk flections to come, such as 'Joie De Vivre', 'Papa Hooper's Barrel House Groove' and the brilliantly corvine 'Raven Speaks'.

The first analogue version of the 8cm single CD was released in November of that year. Review: Hiroshi Miyagawa would have been a fascinating person to sit down and talk with. A prolific and prominent jazz-pop musician in the 1960s, a decade most people would have enjoyed working in the music industry, he picked up a lot of awards during this time playing alongside vocalists such as The Peanuts. This was before he was drafted by producer and promoter Yoshinobu Nishizaki to score a new TV series about a WWII battleship restored, upgraded and sent into space to safeguard humans from extinction. Introducing Space Battleship Yamato, a show that came with a grand symphony which would go on to be one of Miyagawa's crowning legacies, soundtracks to a huge catalogue of episodes, feature length adventures, cash-ins and more. Symphonic Suite Yamato brings much of this together, from the sweeping and romantic to the bombastic, triumphant and tense.

Review: Taeko Onuki's latest release is a live album pressed up to vinyl and capturing her full performance from Tokyo in November 2023. The show featured a seven-piece band with Hirokazu Ogura on guitar, Masato Suzuki on bass, Takashi Numazawa and Tatsuo Hayashi on drums, Febien Reza Panet on piano, and Toshiyuki Mori and Shohei Amamori on keyboards. This album showcases Onuki's dynamic performance with a talented ensemble and a rich array of sounds from the original multi-tracks. It's a great snapshot of the event as well as being a superb contemporary pop exploration across four sides of vinyl.

Review: You had us at Sakamoto. Or rather you had us at "excerpts from Ryuichi Sakamoto's time working under Nippon Colombia's label, Better Days. First released in 1992, this 12-track compilation runs from tracks that appeared on the Japanese synth legend's debut album, Thousand Knives, first released in 1978, through to songs written with the iconic session group KYLYN, featuring celebrated guitar great Kazumi Watanabe. Ever the auteur, even if you didn't know this was Sakamoto in proper landmark mode, there's no chance the sounds here could really be confused for anyone or anything else. It's mature and intelligent, yet strangely - and typically - fun, childlike and a little cartoonish, sharing as much in common with experimental electronica that was emerging during the 1970s and 1980s as video game scores from the 1990s.

Review: The final album from Tokyo's Soul Media marks a shift from 70s jazz-rock towards something richer, more refined i less about force, more about feel. Jiro Inagaki's soundworld here is open-ended but precise, framed by Norio Maeda's meticulous arrangements and a studio band that breathes through every turn. 'Memory Lane' is as mellow as its name implies, full of soft brass swells and swirling keys that hint at nostalgia without sinking into it. 'I Will Give You Samba' offers contrast i sharp-edged, quick-stepping and filled with rhythmic crosscurrents, while 'Take My Hand' struts with effortless cool, its groove compact but expressive. The palette is wide, from ballads like 'Dried Flowers' to the cinematic sweep of 'Double Images', all held together by a sense of elegant restraint. Everything is placed just so i from Eri Ohno's gliding vocals to Tadayuki Harada's moody baritone i but nothing feels stiff. This isn't fusion in the usual sense: it's more like the closing of one chapter, the opening of another, and a deliberate nod to a musical future Inagaki seemed to sense coming. Still a vivid listen today, it's far more than just a footnote in Japanese jazz history.

Review: We Release Jazz proudly purr-loins Hiroshi Suzuki's jazz-fusion-funk gem Cat, first recorded in 1975 and released in 76. With liner notes by Edo jazz critic Teruo Isono, the scene is painted in vivid detail: after moving to LV in 1971 to record with Buddy Rich, Suzuki returned to Japan for a two-day session at Nippon Columbia. Review: High Time is the second album by Japanese rock band The Michelle Gun Elephant, first released in November 1996 through Columbia Japan. Outperforming their previous works, this one was a major breakthrough in their career, coming just eight months after their debut. It coincided with the band's rapid ascent (and our corresponding assent), thanks to the many seething punk hazings-over heard therein, such as 'Brand New Stone', 'Lily' and 'Bowling Machine'. The third especially works in many a sparing and striking sound effect, as heard and caused by many a pro bowler over the years. Interestingly, the CD and vinyl editions have different titles and have different tracklists.

Review: 1969 was the year free improvisation took off in Japan, and this soundtrack album is one of the sparks which lit the flame. Isolation was originally commissioned as a soundtrack to a 'landscape film' entitled Abbreviated Serial Killer, focused on one Norio Nagayama. Masahiko Togayashi teamed up with Motoki Takagi and the duo thought it better to approach the subject without attempting any composition. In the process the two pioneers of free jazz created a landmark work which stands as one of the all-time most important documents of Japanese free jazz.

Review: Hitomi Toyama's 'Sweet Soul Music' originally made it to wax last year, when the track appeared as part of a rare Japanese funk compilation curated by the sound's brightest stars, Wamono. Now, though, it gets a proper release on 7", and is backended by the sultry B-side 'Wanna Kiss', which sounds pitched up and chirpy in its shrill alto vocals, which assure us we're held. The A, meanwhile, is as horny (in both senses of the word) as ever, quite obviously singing the praises of "sweet soul music... I love you!"
