Trillium X
Cat: PMP 2501.
Review: The sixth instalment in Anthony Braxton's Trillium cycle pushes the boundaries of the operatic form into new metaphysical and improvisational dimensions. Rooted in Chicago's avant-garde tradition but unfolding via a live recording in Prague and a studio session in Darmstadt, the project spans four actsi'Voyage To The New World', 'Robots Versus Humans', 'The Three Sisters' and 'Four Disasters'ieach one housed in an abstract narrative world that operates on dream logic. Braxton, now 80, spent five years developing this work, his most ambitious opera to date. Alongside Swiss conductor Roland Dahinden and the PMP Ensemble I Orchestraione of Europe's most forward-thinking groupsihe weaves twelve solo voices through dense and shifting compositional systems. The box set includes over six hours of material, from the operatic performances themselves to behind-the-scenes footage and a feature-length documentary. This feels like a culminationian 8-CD monument to Braxton's singular synthesis of AACM-rooted jazz, experimental classical and radical improvisation.

Review: American musician, writer and autobiographer Benoit Pioulard's Stanza project began as a winter routine in 2015, with a Telecaster, a tape recorder, and one loop per day, like audio journaling in real time. What started as brief daily sketches in shifting tunings has since expanded into a decade-long exploration of texture, memory and tone. Stanza IV arrives as the most expansive of the lot: long-form, ambient meditations shaped during a turbulent period following the release of his last album Eidetic and the death of Pioulard's father. It's the first instalment to reach vinyl, and clocks in as the 10th release on his Disques d'Honore label.

Ghosted III
Cat: DC 955. Rel: 29 Aug 25
Review: The long-trusted trio of Oren Ambarchi, Johan Berthling and Andreas Werliin are now joined by Norwegian guitarist Fredrik Rasten, and Ghosted III hears them push their stripped-down interplay into freer, wispier terrain. Perhaps recalling well the metrically mystifying works of Burnt Friedman, the third instalment in their Ghosted series builds on thier renowned minimal but tactile approach, where tiny shifts in groove and timbre ripple and froth forth like tectonic events, and initial prog-jazz movements open out subtly to become knaps on plenums of post-rock. Ambarchi's decades of experimenting in electroacoustic drift, Berthling's grounding in Swedish jazz and improv, and Werliin's propulsive drumming (notably in Fire! and Wildbirds & Peacedrums) coalesce again, but Rasten's chiming acoustic textures add fresh tension to the group's hypnosis. Based between Sweden and Australia, these players deal in small-scale dynamics with massive effect.

Review: A cornerstone of 70s German music, Popol Vuh's third album marked a radical shift from their electronic beginnings. Led by Munich-based Florian Fricke, the group dropped the Moog for piano, tambura, oboe and guitar, channelling a sacred, organic minimalism that still defies easy categorisation. The presence of Korean vocalist Djong Yun gives 'Kyrie' and 'Hosianna Mantra' a weightless emotional clarity, hovering somewhere between devotional music, chamber folk and early ambient. Conny Veit's soft-focus guitar work lends a subtle psychedelic edge, but the overall tone is one of spiritual stillness. 'Abschied' and 'Nicht hoch im Himmel' carry a hymnal, meditative depth that prefigures later cosmic jazz and ECM recordings. It remains one of the most singular albums to emerge from Germany's experimental underground-sublime, sincere, and beyond time.

Review: Kudos to Freedom To Spend records for bringing this collection to the forefront, originally released on a DIY cassette only label, these early recordings from the LA-based "two-man electric minimalist band" were virtually unknown even by hardcore ambient enthusiasts. Nevertheless, Ruben Garcia and Steve Caton really helped to push the evolution of ambient music forward in the 80s, combining the then new innivation of drum machines with a minimal Steve Reich type approach to the tracks that uiltimately tempted big names like Harold Budd to collaborate and enocurage. Abstract heaven.
