Even After All

Even After All (SuckaSide remix)
Gorilla Witness
Review: A nice mix of funk, hip-hop and reggae influences go into the melting pot on the latest SuckaSide, with 'Even After All' proving to be a laid back, blunted jam that's backed up with some hard hitting, sturdy beat manouevres. On the edgier sounding flip, meanwhile, a female MC spits with impressive ferocity while a lovely warm - and somewhat familiar - analogue-edge loop works its magic. Both are key components for use at different points in the jam, some badly needed heavy weaponry that Donald Trump can't withdraw from service here.

Be Thankful For What You Got (instrumental)
Review: Sunsay & The Soul Surfers' cover of William DeVaughn's 'Be Thankful For What You Got' is a smooth and classy rendition of the 1974 original. The funk and soul influences are evident in the laid-back groove and sultry vocals, creating a timeless and sophisticated sound. With Massive Attack's 1991 cover also gaining recognition, this song has become a staple in the genres of funk and soul. The 7' vinyl reissue from 2024 remains faithful to the original release, capturing the essence of the track in its entirety. The B-side features the instrumental version, providing musicians and DJs with a versatile tool for sampling and remixing. 'Be Thankful For What You Got' serves as a reminder to appreciate the things we have, both big and small, and to find contentment in the present moment.

Que Se Sepa (part 1)
Que Se Sepa (part 2)
Review: A rare and new dose of lightness in master-at-work Kenny Dope's otherwise breaks-massive catalogue, as he's heard teaming up with Daniel Rojo for 'Que Se Sepa Pt. 1 & 2', a two-part single on his own Kay-Dee Records. Pulsing with Latin breaks vigour, the tune draws inspo from Roberto Roena's classic cover, fat-stacking tropical percs and pipping beats. Unobvious salsa vibes extend over the otherwise minimal beats as if by insinuation, while Daniel Rojo's vocals down anchor on said set of otherwise free-floating beats. Another wicked one from Kay-Dee, continuing his/its its tradition of spotlighting Latin-infused sounds.

Funky Soul Brother (FSB demo version)
Review: When it comes to new funk, it doesn't get much raunchier or weird than this. Packed with rhythmic rodomontade, DJ Koco Shimokit and Southpaw Chop - both from Japan - bring an adroit right and sinister left hand respectively to the art of vinyl flipping and sampling, staying true to the rule of primary sourcing: "always sample straight from the original wax." Though it's a moot point as to whether sample mileage should be legitimated as a concept in the same sense as food mileage is, we can see and hear the appeal, as this loopy chef-d'œuvre hears its samples chopped and braised to the crispest degree, sating even the most dulled of tastebuds, and letting no indelicacy past the noise gates. Side B offers a special treat for heads too: the demo version of the pair's debut single, 'Funky Soul Brother'.

Pete Rock & CL Smooth - "They Reminisce Over You"
The Beginning Of The End - "When She Made Me Promise"
Review: A timeless sample transmission is documented on this latest reissue from From The Voltz, a label whose 7" works specialise in such historicisms. In this case, we've the 1991 single 'They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)' by Pete Rock and CL Smooth, a mythical hip-hop duo from Mount Vernon, New York, whose foundational work in the East Coast rap and DJing scene enabled many later developments. With Rock especially often grouped among the best and most esteemed of rap producers alongside Premier and RZA, 'T.R.O.Y.' is emblematic of the era's distinctive jazz-hop breezes. In turn, the track sampled 'When She Made Me Promise', a relatively obscure Nassau funk group formed in 1969; the sample can be instantly clocked, save for its shrewd pitching down by a tone or two.

Review: Tony Lavrutz & Scruscru join forces for this latest fiery 45 rpm on Scruniversal. First up, they also call on Mr. And-7 to get involved on 'La Malanga 25', a sunny funk jam with raw horns that bring a Mexican twist to the percussive drums and lively pianos. Marelua steps up for the flip side, 'Paragunde 45', which slows things down and burns warm and bright with Portuguese vocals and plenty of gorgeous acoustic guitar trills. Both of these are primed and ready to inject Latin flavour into any set the moment the sun comes out, so are likely to fly off the shelves.

Review: Who doesn't love a good edit? And who really does them much better than Danny Krivit, a veteran of the game with millions of them (probably) to his name. Here he turns his hand to Sjuya Okino's 'Thank You (feat Navasha Daya)' which is a jazz dancer with effervescing broken beats, busy chords and live percussion under a freeform scat vocal that brims with soul. On the flip, DJ Kawasaki edits a Dimitri Form Paris mix of 'Give Your Love A Chance (feat Clara Hill)' which has a Chic-style bass riff and big disco energy that's ripe and ready to bring good times to any party.

The Lafayette Afro Rock Band - "Darkest Light" (45 edit)

Review: Mushi 45 prompt a history lesson: Hailing from Paris in the early 70s, Lafayette Afro Rock Band forged a fusion of American funk and West African rhythms, producing grooves that stuck like thumbtacks through later genera such as hip-hop and electronica. Their track 'Darkest Light' stands out for its piercing, mussitating bari sax riff, famously looped on Jay-Z's 'Show Me What You Got'. Another essential cut, 'Deep Gully', delivers sharp guitar stabs over a crisp drum break, also a backbone for numerous hip-hop and jungle tracks. The group's sessions at Pierre Jaubert's Parisound studio yielded records like Soul Makossa and Malik, both cult classics rich in percussion and horn work.

'Trip Through The Galaxy' is a slow-motion cosmic trip that is vast in scale and high on soul thanks to the warm vocal that floats amidst funky riffs and glowing keys. 'Every DJ' lands back on 7", flipping a vocal sample from Cutty Ranks' 'The Stopper' into a punchy, bass-heavy instrumental built for crossfader work. Review: This is a reissue of a rare soul single by The Nu' Rons, a vocal quartet from Salem, NJ who recorded only around four singles in their still-strong career. Surprisingly, 'You Came Thru' was not one of them, and is yet another new single to be issued for the first time via Cannonball, after renewed interest in the band came about sometime in the late 2010s. 'You Came Thru' is a slick and uptempo expression of gratitude for love, while the bundled-in 'Hurry Up Tomorrow' is a comparatively slow and sweet, yet no less tight, paean to the a golden era of love.

Light As Before (Noche Esponola remix)
Review: Phil Mison, long revered for his chill-out sets and Balearic sensibility as a DJ, not to mention over two dozen releases under his belt, returns as Cantoma with a new single that perfectly captures the spirit of sunset listening. 'Light As Before' is a gentle and evocative piece built on Latin percussion, breezy guitar work and a standout horn section that lifts the track into a golden-hour daydream. It's the kind of track that feels tailor-made for a coastal terrace, a glass in hand and nowhere to be but the present. The B-side remix is a tasteful reimagining that dials down the horns and replaces them with soft flutes and delicate acoustic textures. This version leans deeper into the groove with a more introspective yet still melodic mood. It trades some of the exuberance for warmth and depth, making it an ideal complement to the original. Both sides highlight Mison's continued mastery of Balearic downtempo.

Review: Dynamite Cuts continue their hot streak of essential 7" reissues with two soulful gems from North Carolina-born soul legend Johnny Bristol. Best known for his silky vocal style and smooth songwriting, Bristol's original recording of 'I Wouldn't Change A Thing' is presented here in all its lush, upbeat gloryia joyous rare-groove dancer that later found fame through Coke Escovedo's version. The flip, 'Lusty Lady', slows the tempo slightly, opening with a crisp drum-break before unfolding into a seductive mid-tempo groove, complete with lush strings and understated funkiness. Feet Don't Fail Me Now
Review: Crate stuff! Mister Mushi kicks off his Disco Donuts series with two sly flips of ultra-obscure disco-soul cuts, both victoriously dug and reworked with a specialist ear. On the A-side, 'Can't Buy Soul' takes Hebrew Rodgers' near-forgotten 1973 Original Sound release and spins it into a straight four-bar burner without losing the grit of the original's broke-backbeat funk. The B-side, 'Feet Don't Fail Me Now', pulls a similarly shadowy gem into the light, provenance unclear, but groove undeniable. Mushi's edits rewire the tunes with surgical patience, turning overlooked source material into usable dancefloor tools: two bullets for heads who like their disco rare and their kicks on time.

Much of that - including a quartet of must-have albums - has appeared via Los Angeles' Stones Throw Records. Here they make a rare appearance on another imprint - Japan's Lawson Entertainment to be exact - with a surprise cover of a British boogie gem from the early 80s - Intrigue's sought-after 'I Like It (Money Crazy)'. Their take is respectful to the original but altogether more polished, sparkling and colourful, with Hawthorne providing a typically impressive lead vocal. Review: Two long-overlooked cuts from New Jersey funk legends Kool & the Gang finally land on 7", pulled from a lesser-known chapter in their prolific catalogue. 'Rated X' is the clear highlight: a blistering, brass-soaked club weapon that's been doing damage on the right dancefloors for years, now finally pressed to 45rpm. Its groove is taut, funky and unfiltered, showing the group's rawest instincts before the crossover polish of later records. Flip it for 'North East South West', a looser, sun-streaked number built on syncopated horns and low-slung rhythm guitar-a snapshot of Kool & the Gang in full livewire form. Both tracks come from a time when the band were stretching funk's parameters, fusing tight musicianship with unrelenting energy. Review: The Bird series is back once again with a fourth offering and it is label founder Jason Wilkins who takes care of this one under his Camille moniker. It kicks off with a flip of 'Hogin' Machine' that has raw and dusty drums and funky basslines that keep on coming and keep you locked. things slow down n the B-Side with 'Safari in D'. This one becomes a more mellow and laidback sound that offer a different take on an original by L'Eclair. The bass is warm and melodic, the drums loveably lazy and the keys jazzy and pensive. Super stuff for lo-fi lovers.

Review: This is a single taken from UK jazz-funk outfit Funkshone's debut album which features a cover of the classic free-soul anthem 'I Believe In Miracles' by the Jackson Sisters. It's a raw and direct funk-soul sound that has been increasingly popular in recent years with champions like Floating Points often weaving it into his sets. On the B-side, they offer a freshly recorded take on 'Panama' by Roy Porter Sound Machine, which was previously only found on select CD editions. It is powered by an explosive drum break that hits with near-manic intensity from the very first beat and is a nice driving counter to the soulful A-side.

Review: After a one-off 45 turned up on Paul Murphy's desk, it didn't take long for Jazz Room to come calling. The result: a scorching double-header due for the end of June 2025, with Jungle Fire members at the controls. On the A-side, Sun Ra's 'Watusa' is reimagined as a driving Latin Afrosound workout, all percussion and propulsion, already picking up airplay on Gilles Peterson's BBC 6 Music show. Flip it and you'll find a deep-grooving take on Charles Mingus' 'Meditations On Integration', funked-up but still meditative, a bold recut of a classic.

The A1 delivers a fresh Latin take on Earth, Wind & Fire's evergreen floor fave 'Brazilian Rhyme', optically shifted through vibrant, horn-driven movements and bolder basslines, shimmering electric pianisms, and brumming brass, concocting an patented sound all their own. On the flip, DJ Kawasaki steps in to reimagine the band's much sought-after 2023 single 'Samurai', already a global wantlist staple, transforming it into a hotter club-salsa charmer.

Review: Sofian label Soul Dynamite sling a skilful slice over our way, assuring us of the finely appraised editing work of Plovdiv producer Skill. Flat caps, ochre-rimmed glasses and dug crates seem to surround Skill like bees to honey, as the self-professed "pioneer in the purveyance of soulful, funky and jazzy hip-hop" makes evident his own expertise in a monosyllabic name. Two seconds in and we already know that 'Tribute To The Godfather' refers to none other than James Brown; we hear his many rhythm-perfect funk "huhs" striating the a fearsome breaks opener. We conclude on the sax-furloughed 'Danger', which steers hip-hoppier, and sacrifices the original vocals from Brown for an unknown sample source, though the King Of Soul's reign is not lost on it.

Review: London soul-jazz composer and producer Andrei Nikolsky - formerly of the equal-parts Palace Records favourite The Kanpai Quartet - now broadcasts yet two more heavy-hitters from straight from the label whose logo pulls from the iconographic Crystal Palace Transmitter. 'Botchit & Scarper' is heard far and wide, hijacking the airwaves with what sounds at face value like an unsound moral principle - but on second listen to its slack-shouldered ease, whimsied brass and scaphoid drumming, might function just as well as a principle for free living. Of course, if something's worth doing then it's worth doing "botched", though Nikolsky currently hasn't botched this one. 'Wafty' follows as the blue piano sojourn, replete with plinking ninths and a hiss-hummed rhythms section.

The fifth entry in the cult series again looks to unearth rare Afro disco gems and rework them with precision and soul. On Side A, 'AMDS' is a hypnotic cut with a rolling bassline that radiates warmth as the original is respectfully reimagined with sharp edits and an extended arrangement built for movement. The B-side is a spiritual stunner that melds heartfelt vocals with layered rhythms and dreamy keys to back the soulful vocal. Known equally for their earlier collaboration as Real Live, they sample the same jazz sources as utilised on that project but now rebuild said material through distinct approaches, resulting in three contrasting adumbrations of style. An extra cut from Funky Soul Brother completes the trifecta, remixing an earlier DJ Koco and Chop rendezvous, shortly before a bonus trick by Chop gauds the mix in mellow style. With smoky textures and rhythms filtered through unimpeachable jazz samples, the project embodies the "castle town style" so implied in the title.

This newly redid version has been fine-tuned for maximum playback quality, thanks to an effortful mastering job from Bernie Grundman. 'No Return' outlays crisp boom-bap drums wrapped in fluttering flute lines from Michael Sarason (of Say She She) and shimmering harp hallelujahs, courtesy of Cincinnati handywoman Rachel Miller. There's a distinct nod to Dorothy Ashby's work here, but reimagined for a 2025 palette; the flip leads the way to the 'Path Of Man', stripping the bark back to murkier moods, pulling from the darker corners of Conroy's upcoming full-length. He's come a long way since vacationing from the cutting lathe, representing himself in a new soulful and cinematic light, one which is yet raw and unpolished where it counts.

By 1972, they channelled said many cross-country encounters with Black Power politics, spiritual jazz and liberation struggles into Blackground: a bold, pan-African statement recorded not in Luanda but Lisbon. The Angolan duo, already global stars in Portuguese-speaking circuits, were heard fusing jazz-funk with messages of decolonisation and Black identity, summed up in Raul Indipwo's cry: "Don't forget your blackground." A decade later, in 1981, the record was reworked with fresh arrangements and additions like the instrumental 'Iemenja' and the percussion-heavy 'Aruandai'. This new edition from Digei De Bairro brings that fiercely rhythmic and politically charged LP back into circulation, a vital slice of Lusophone jazz-funk with global intent.

A new 16-track compilation, it captures the fierce, joyful energy of Michi's golden era on Discos Fuentes, a label synonymous with Colombia's explosive tropical sound. Addressing civil rights, urban life, and Black identity with rare grace, it's little wonder that his catalogue has since proved a goldmine for reinterpretation, where 'Move On Up', 'The Makings of You' and 'People Get Ready' continue to inspire covers over generations. Here, howsoever the decision was made, do Soul Shepherds reshake a less-known Mayfield favourite in dub, 'Give Me Your Love', a dark-horse ode to good lovin', originally track 6 on the soul star's great soundtrack to the pimpin' 70s film Superfly. "It's true, you're such a gun / Make my lungs sigh" go the brusque lyrics, proving the sensuousness of Mayfield's broadly applicable approach to love.

Review: London-based producer Sholto (Oscar Robertson) teams up with Melbourne pianist Finn Rees for two collaborative pieces recorded in a short session at SFJ Studios. 'Love In Memory' and 'Bluebell' were laid down over consecutive days using analogue equipment, including mellotron, Wurlitzer and ribbon mics and mixed through a 70s Studer desk. The result is a measured blend of jazz-inflected composition and cinematic texture, leaning into the soft-focus feel of Italian film scores and 70s library music. 'Love In Memory' is the more stripped-back of the two, built around glissando keys and lightly arranged strings while 'Bluebell' adds bass from Matthew Hayes and develops in longer arcs, with warmer low-end and more defined structure. Both tracks avoid excess, favouring tone and pacing over virtuosity. String parts from Clementine Brown further the record's focus on texture rather than drama. The collaboration doesn't aim to be definitive but lands confidently as a quiet, well-formed experiment between two artists working with a shared vocabulary.

Review: A limited red vinyl edition of Sofian producer Skill's skilful 'Tribute To The Godfather', a simple yet effective 7" breaks edit outlining just how much tension and suspense can be fleshed out of a James Brown drum sample. Mr. James Brown, undoubtedly the linchpin of funk, is said to have been so tyrannically dictatorial during recordings that he would fire session drummers in a flash if they were slightly behind. Only a man with gangsta-level gusto could have squeezed this breakbeat out of a young Clyde Stubblefield, signalled by a decided "hit it now" from our sequin-flared compere.

La Reina Nocturna
Review: Another vintage cumbia movement on 7", replete with cowbell, on Nu Tone. Specialising in two-trackers, these guys draw on the deeper wells of 60s and early 70s Peruvian psychedelia; here the Bay Area group Combo Tezeta fuse cumbias, chichas and musica tropical; The A brings 'La Danza Del Camaleon', a swirled world fusion of cumbia and salsa with psych-tinged flourishes, before 'La Reina Nocturna', a shadowy, slow-burning bolero that leans into moodier territory with a haunting, Horrors-y melodic line.

Finance Or Romance
Body Wave
Review: Some cynics say there's no romance *without* finance, but the one hit wondrous German funk and soulers Thirty Two Soul Band begged to differ. A formerly unreleased lowrider soul beauty from 1975, 'Finance Or Romance' was shelved for nearly half a century, but now it finally steps out of the vault and chooses love. Woozy horns collide with a plaintive groove that could've easily lit up any Eastside cruise: "what's it gonna be, what's it gonna be?". On the flip, 'Body Wave' also resurfaces for the first time since its scarce 7" run, a sultry midtempo cut, dusty fidelity intact.

Yume No Tsuzuki (instrumental)
Review: Fresh from the release of her typically excellent Love Fest single - a masterclass in boogie and 80s synth-soul revivalism, like much of her output - Boston-based artist Saucy Lady pays tribute to the 1980s musical culture of her native Japan. Produced in collaboration with Aussie producer Slynk (who last worked with Saucy Lady in 2023), 'Yume No Tsuzuki' sits somewhere between vintage 'City Pop' and Japanese takes on 80s soul. As you'd expect, it's as musically authentic as you'd expect - colourful synths, punchy drum machine beats and boogie sonic squiggles aplenty - with Saucy Lady singing in both Japanese and English. The superb full vocal version (side A) is our pick, but the instrumental mix is also well worth club plays.

Italian Love Triangle
Review: Emerging from Reno, Nevada in 2009, Whatitdo Archive Group has quietly built a niche among collectors of rare soundtracks and obscure grooves. The trio - Alexander Korostinsky, Mark Sexton and Aaron Chiazza - combine their passions as composers, engineers and record enthusiasts to dig deep into forgotten musical corners. After 2023's Palace Of A Thousand Sounds now comes Exotique, again an Amazonian amazement of mid-Century library repros and Near East orchestral funk fusions, filtered through the asperous Nevadan temperament shared between them.

Review: Bronx MC Rob-O returns with his first official solo release, more than two decades after his work with 90s underground crew INI. 'Rocket Science' is a tight, mid-tempo track produced by Paris-based Lex (de Kalhex), who also handled their 2012 collaboration. The beat is minimal but deliberate i a dusty loop with light keys and clean drums that hold space without distraction. Rob-O's vocal version plays it straight: a dense verse structure, clipped delivery and clear nods to Rakim-era cadences. The instrumental on the flip mirrors the vocal arrangement exactly, offering DJs and heads a clean alternate take. Nothing here feels overplayed. The mix by Parental is crisp, with the mastering by K-Def preserving warmth without softening the edges. This is a concise reintroduction to a voice with deep roots in New York's underground lineage.

Review: What happens when a rare groove gem and a hip-hop classic collide? Groove-Diggers answered that with a slick rework merging Mighty Ryeders' Evil Vibrations and De La Soul's A Roller Skating Jam Named 'Saturdays' which now gets a welcome reissue on P-Vine. This fresh flip features De La's iconic vocals layered over the original sample plus new verses from Japanese rap trio FNCY, who salute the golden age with style. Adding another twist, rising Taiwanese star 9m88 delivers a smooth Japanese-language cover of Evil Vibrations. The result is a playful, dancefloor-ready blend of soul, funk and hip-hop nostalgia that is a great balance of tribute and reinvention. Turn it up loud.
